| Rangers 4 VS. Islanders 2
October 27 2008 |
Last season, the New York Rangers took only three of eight games from their also-ran rivals, the New York Islanders. With only six games on this season's schedule, the Rangers are already off to a good start. Team captain Chris Drury scored his first two goals and Henrik Lundqvist made 28 saves in a 4-2 victory over the Islanders on Monday night. The Rangers (9-2-1) tied the franchise record for best start through 12 games and have the most points in the NHL. The Islanders (2-6) own the fewest. "It's still early in the season, so who knows where everybody ends up," said Tom Renney, who passed Roger Neilson for fourth place on the Rangers' coaching victory list with No. 142.

| Titans 34 VS. Chiefs 10
October 19 2008 |
The Tennessee Titans haven't been this good and the Kansas City Chiefs haven't been this bad in 31 years. With Chris Johnson running for 168 yards and LenDale White 149, the Titans (6-0) remained the NFL's lone unbeaten team by rushing for a club-record 332 yards in a 34-10 blowout Sunday. The record that fell was set with 296 yards the Houston Oilers amassed on the ground against Kansas City on Nov. 27, 1977, almost two decades before the team moved to Tennessee. The Chiefs (1-5) also saw a record take a tumble in what's shaping up as one of their worst seasons since moving to Kansas City in the early '60s. The 332 yards erased the record of 330 by the ...

| Dodgers 5 VS. Phillies 7
October 13 2008 |
Shane Victorino and Matt Stairs launched two-run homers in the eighth inning Monday night to power the Phillies to a crushing 7-5 comeback win over the Dodgers and a three-games-to-one lead in the best-of-seven National League Championship Series. Victorino, the former Dodgers farmhand, homered off Cory Wade, and Stairs' pinch-hit blast came off Jonathan Broxton. "Cory Wade's numbers against left-hand hitters this year have been really good. He threw a breaking ball and it stayed up," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said of the Victorino shot. Stairs' homer was the first one Broxton had surrendered at Dodger Stadium since July 2006. The Dodgers took a 5-3 lead into ...

| Dodgers 2 VS. Phillies 3
October 09 2008 |
One game into the National League Championship Series and the Dodgers know for sure that this isn't the NL Division Series. The Philadelphia Phillies are not the Chicago Cubs: They battle from behind, they won't be swept, they beat your proven big-game pitcher. They did it to Derek Lowe on Thursday night, 3-2, flexing their long-ball muscles in a quick but decisive display. They rallied in the opener of the best-of-seven series with a pair of home runs that beat the Dodgers for the fifth straight time this year in Citizens Bank Park, whose quirky dimensions worked against the visitors all night. The two-run tying home run Chase Utley slugged in the three-run sixth inning landed in the ...

| Angels 2 VS. Red Sox 3
October 06 2008 |
Instead of suffering an agonizing loss, the Red Sox instead turned the tables in dramatic fashion in the ninth inning and pulled off a walk-off win that vaulted them right into the American League Championship Series. Jed Lowrie raked a two-out single to right against Scot Shields, scoring Jason Bay from second to give the Red Sox an unforgettable 3-2 victory over the Angles in clinching Game 4 of the AL Division Series. Bay set up the rally with a one-out, ground-rule double to right. The Angels had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the top of the ninth, getting a leadoff double from Kendry Morales and then a sacrifice bunt by Howie Kendrick that pushed pinch-runner ...

| White Sox 4 VS. Devil Rays 6
October 02 2008 |
Evan Longoria led a 6-4 Rays win over the White Sox Thursday afternoon in Game 1 of the American League Division Series. A raucous sellout crowd of 35,041 at Tropicana Field watched as the rookie hit home runs in his first two at-bats. Longoria set off a roar when he deposited Javier Vazquez's first pitch of the second inning into the left-field stands to give the Rays a 1-0 lead. Dewayne Wise silenced the crowd in the third with a two-out three-run homer off a 2-2 pitch from Rays starter James Shields to give the White Sox a 3-1 lead. Jason Bartlett singled to start a three-run third for the Rays. Akinori Iwamura tripled home Bartlett before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Willy Aybar.

| Marlins 0 VS. Mets 2 |
September 27 2008 |
Three seconds passed, all in silence, some in fits of trepidation. The Mets could laugh about it later, of course, knowing that the ball would land safely in Endy Chavez's glove, thus preserving their season for another day. But it wasn't funny then, with the ball threatening to scrape over Shea Stadium's left-field wall, perhaps undoing an afternoon's worth of near-perfection. Then Chavez caught the ball, the scoreboard illuminated a 2-0 victory over the Marlins, and Shea burst into countless orange and blue streaks of noise. Johan Santana, pitching on short rest and in the most significant game of the season, had single-handedly saved the Mets, almost willing them back into a tie for the National League Wild Card lead.

Hank Blalock hit a home run for the fourth straight game to lead the Rangers to a 14-4 victory over the Athletics at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on Wednesday. A crowd of 16,832 watched as the Rangers scored eight runs in the sixth inning to break the game open and finish out their home schedule with a win. The Rangers finished 40-41 at home this season. | Brewers 8 VS. Reds 1 |
September 21 2008 |
There's fight left in these Brewers after all. With their backs against the National League Wild Card wall, the Brewers busted out for six runs by the end of the fifth inning and salvaged the finale of a tough road trip with an 8-1 win over the Reds on Sunday at Great American Ball Park. The Brewers finished a 2-8 trip and won for just the fifth time in 20 games this month to stay alive in the National League Wild Card chase. They entered the day 2 1/2 games behind the Mets, who in turn trailed the NL East-leading Phillies by a half-game. Prince Fielder drove in three runs and Ryan Braun drove in one as the Brewers' middle-of-the-order players inched closer to 100 RBIs.

| Cardinals 12 VS. Cubs 6 |
September 19 2008 |
Adam Kennedy's grand slam was the biggest hit in an unceasing barrage against Carlos Zambrano, and the Cardinals beat the Cubs, 12-6, at Wrigley Field on Friday afternoon. St. Louis has won back-to-back games after losing seven straight. Zambrano (14-6), coming off a no-hitter in his last appearance, had nothing for the Cardinals in an ugly 1 2/3-inning start. The first three batters touched him for base hits, making it 1-0, and after a walk and a fly out, Kennedy drilled the second grand slam of his career. Two hits and two walks in the second inning chased Zambrano, and Kennedy greeted reliever Sean Marshall with an RBI single.

He's 14-11 overall this year, which includes a four-game win streak and victories in six of his past seven starts. Casey Blake, who missed the previous game with lower back soreness, returned to the lineup with three hits -- a home run, triple and RBI single. Manny Ramirez had three hits for the second consecutive game.

| Chargers 38 vs. Broncos 39 |
September 14 2008 |
Showing ultimate confidence in his offense, Mike Shanahan went for the 2-point conversion with 29 seconds left and Jay Cutler hit rookie Eddie Royal over the middle to give the Denver Broncos a 39-38 win over the stunned San Diego Chargers on Sunday. The Chargers (0-2) couldn't believe they lost in the final seconds for the second straight week. Trailing 38-31, the Broncos (2-0) reached the 1 but on third-and-goal, Cutler reared back to throw and the ball slipped out of his hands, bounced off the grass and into linebacker Tim Dobbins' hands. But referee Ed Hochuli blew his whistle, apparently ruling it an incomplete pass.

| Braves 3 vs. Mets 2 |
September 13 2008 |
Knowing how close the Mets are to their goals -- and knowing also how close they were at this time last year -- manager Jerry Manuel spent a good portion of Saturday afternoon discussing what his team still must accomplish. "We've got to continue to play good baseball," Manuel said, reiterating his rallying cry of the past three months. "And pitch," he continued. "Pitch a lot better than we did in the last series." Johan Santana did; the bullpen did not. And the end result of Saturday's doubleheader matinee did not prove to be quite so even, with the Braves parlaying Omar Infante's tie-breaking sacrifice fly into a 3-2 win ...

| Brewers 4 vs. Reds 3 |
September 10 2008 |

The Brewers finally got a clutch hit, and it came just in time. Mike Cameron ripped a two-out, two-strike single that gave the Brewers a 4-3 win over the Reds on Wednesday and averted what would have been a devastating Cincinnati sweep. Instead, the Brewers finished their homestand with a 3-7 record and headed into a four-game showdown in Philadelphia with at least a three-game lead over the Phillies in the National League Wild Card standings. The Brewers entered the bottom of the eighth inning in a 3-2 hole, but rallied against Reds setup man David Weathers (2-6). J.J. Hardy singled, Ryan Braun walked and Prince Fielder singled to load the bases... |

| Philadelphia 8 vs. New York 6 |
July 23 2008 |
Jimmy Rollins' two-run double as part of a six-run ninth led the Philadelphia Phillies to a come-from-behind 8-6 win over the New York Mets in the opener of a three-game NL East battle at Shea Stadium. The Phils were trailing by three runs to start the ninth and Duaner Sanchez took the mound to close out the game. However, he didn't record an out and singles by Jayson Werth, Greg Dobbs and Shane Victorino loaded the bases. Joe Smith then took the mound and induced a grounder up the middle from Carlos Ruiz that Jose Reyes fielded, but Reyes was unable to tag second before Victorino got there and everyone was safe with Werth crossing the plate.

April 27, 2008 |

The Toronto Raptors could be one game away from saying so long to their season. But facing what Chris Bosh acknowledges will be the "hardest game of the year," the Raptors captain wasn't ready to concede defeat just yet. "Don't we have a game Monday?" Bosh said. "It's not over yet, it's not over until we lose one game, so we have to show up and we have to win, that's a fact of the matter." Bosh had 39 points and 15 rebounds Saturday, but the best post-season performance of his career wasn't enough as Toronto fell 106-94 to Orlando, giving the Magic a 3-1 lead and sending the best-of-seven series back to Orlando with the Raptors facing elimination.
