Student poker players attending Washington State University have witnessed a roller coaster of a ride when it comes to poker. Though the state has 23 casinos, and Washington's state law specifically allows poker to be played, students saw a crash of poker options once the state equated playing poker online to sex offenses. The state's 2006 law targeting online poker players made it a Class C felony to play online. Many players thought the law went too far when legislation was passed which would have made it illegal to even "discuss", by writing or blogging, online poker. WSU student poker players don't need too concerned about the law...

| Interesting Times for Sweden's Svenska Spel
| September 19 2007 |
|
Svenska Spel, the state-run gambling operation that controls Sweden's official gambling operations, has recently found itself between the proverbial rock and hard place as it attempts to remain competitive in the European poker market, as a part of the early battle over European Union policies regarding member citizens' open access to online gambling.
Sweden, like France, is one of the EU member nations currently at an impasse with the international organization over allowing outside, private-owned firms to market their services. | Danish Court Rules Competence Vital; Poker is Game of Skill
| July 24 2007 |
|
A municipal court in Denmark has ruled that poker tournaments are not a form of chance-based gambling, deciding that competence in the game is vital to success, a skill-based criterion.
Late in 2006, charges of illegal gambling were filed against Frederik Hostrup, chairman of the Danish Poker Association. Hostrup was cited for arranging poker tournaments with an entry fee, which was a violation of Danish gambling laws. Hostrup and his lawyer, Henrik Hoffmann, decided to fight the charges and attempt to prove that poker is a game of skill, not of luck.
