San Diego was swept in a three-game set over the weekend by the Colorado Rockies and has fallen 2 1/2 games behind the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NL West. The Padres, though, still lead the wild card, but their advantage is just a half-game on the Philadelphia Phillies.

Beijing, China (Sports Network) - Agnes Szavay roared back for a stunning three-set victory over Jelena Jankovic in Sunday's title match at the China Open.
The sixth-seeded Szavay earned her second career WTA title and second this year with a 6-7 (7-9), 7-5, 6-2 victory. The 18-year-old Hungarian first won at Palermo in July.
Jankovic, the tournament's second seed and the third-ranked player in the world, was on the verge of victory. The Serbian star was ahead 5-1 in the second set and had a match point when it all fell apart.

Gothenburg, Sweden (Sports Network) - Andy Roddick handled Joachim Johansson in straight sets, while Thomas Johansson downed James Blake in four in Friday's opening singles action in the Davis Cup semifinal between the visiting United States and Sweden.
The former world No. 1 Roddick recorded a 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 victory over Joachim Johansson in 1 hour, 53 minutes in a hard-serving affair on an indoor carpet at Scandinavium, but the 2002 Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson promptly pulled the hosts even, at 1-all, by besting Blake in 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 fashion in 2 hours, 5 minutes.

The Angels enter this four-game set with Seattle holding an 8 1/2-game lead over the second-place Mariners in the West standings. With Anaheim's magic number currently at three, the club needs only to earn a series split to clinch the division.

Hempstead, NY (Sports Network) - New York Jets quarterback Chad Pennington hopes his injured right ankle has healed enough for him to play in the team's game against the Miami Dolphins Sunday.
"I've made a lot of progress and that's a tribute to our medical staff," Pennington said on Wednesday. "People inside and outside of the organization are really working hard, focusing on getting me better, rehabbing and working extremely hard around the clock. I'm making progress and I feel really good about the situation."

| Falcons sign QB Leftwich

Flowery Branch, GA (Sports Network) - The Atlanta Falcons signed quarterback Byron Leftwich on Tuesday.
Terms of the deal were not released, but according to the Atlanta Journal- Constitution, the contract is for two years and worth $7 million.
Leftwich, the seventh pick of the 2003 draft, was 24-20 as a starter in four injury-plagued seasons in Jacksonville. He was released on September 1 when Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio decided to go with David Garrard under center.

Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Jhonny Peralta tied the game with a two-out, two-run home run in the eighth then Casey Blake ended it with a solo shot just over the high wall in left during the 11th frame, as Cleveland downed Detroit, 6-5, at Jacobs Field.
For Blake, it was another dramatic ending with one swing of the bat. The third baseman capped Friday night's victory with his home run in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Kansas City.

| Tiger wins Tour Championship

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Tiger Woods closed with a four-under 66 Sunday to cruise to his seventh win of the season at the Tour Championship.
Woods completed the event at 23-under-par 257 and also won the inaugural FedEx Cup easily over Steve Stricker. Woods started three of the four playoff events and finished second, first and first.
Thanks in part to the soft greens at East Lake, Woods shattered the 36- and 54-hole scoring marks. With his 257 total, Woods also smashed the previous 72- hole scoring mark of 263, which Bart Bryant set in 2005.

Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - David Ross hit a two-run home run and Aaron Harang pitched seven strong innings as the Cincinnati Reds completed a three- game sweep of the struggling St. Louis Cardinals with a 5-4 victory at Great American Ball Park.
Harang (15-4) continued his impressive 2007 season, giving up just three hits and three runs, while Joey Votto went 3-for-4 with a two-run double for the Reds, who have won five of six to move three games behind the Cardinals for third place in the NL Central.
St. Louis threatened in the ninth as Albert Pujols led off with a double and scored on Jim Edmonds' single to make it a one-run game.
