| Raiders host Rams in preseason action
| August 24 2007 |
|
The Oakland Raiders' contentious quarterback situation should come a step closer to resolution tonight, when Lane Kiffin and company host the St. Louis Rams in the third preseason warm-up for both clubs. A trio of quarterbacks - former Cardinals starter Josh McCown, holdover Andrew Walter, and three-time Pro Bowler Daunte Culpepper - currently grace the Oakland roster at signal-caller. All have had their moments during the preseason to date, but the eventual presence of No. 1 pick JaMarcus Russell, who is embroiled in a holdout, means that only two of the veterans are likely to stick at...

| Packers attempt to remain perfect
| August 23 2007 |
|
The Green Bay Packers will try to move their preseason record to a perfect 3-0 tonight, when Mike McCarthy's club plays host to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the third tune-up for each squad. Green Bay, which finished the 2006 regular season with four straight wins, has thus far defeated both Pittsburgh (13-9) and Seattle (48-13) in the preseason. In last Saturday's rout of the Seahawks, the Pack took advantage of six Seattle turnovers, including fumbles that were returned for touchdowns by Green Bay linebackers Nick Barnett and Tracy White. On the offensive side of the football, quarterback Brett...

Kyle Kendrick pitched into the seventh inning -- and the club will need him with Cole Hamels' status now in doubt -- as the Philadelphia Phillies held on for a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Citizens Bank Park. Kendrick (6-3) won for the first time in four starts, giving up four runs on seven hits with two walks over 6 2/3 innings. Carlos Ruiz doubled twice, scored and drove home a run while Aaron Rowand hit his 21st home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fourth, for the Phillies, who rebounded from a disappointing finish to a 3-3 road trip with a pair of losses in Pittsburgh....

| August 21 2007 |
|
The Philadelphia Eagles parted ways with a key defensive leader on Tuesday, releasing middle linebacker Jeremiah Trotter. "Jeremiah is one of my favorite guys," said Eagles head coach Andy Reid. "There's no question that this is the toughest part of this job. He and I met about this last night and it was very emotional for the both of us. Jeremiah and I have been together for many years and he's played a vital role in helping this team win a lot of football games." A third-round draft choice of the Eagles in 1998, Trotter spent his first four seasons in the City of Brotherly Love, earning...
