Milwaukee Brewers 7 vs. Toronto Jays 0 : RECAP

June 18, 2008

Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Ryan Braun went 3-for-4, homered twice, drove in three runs and scored three runs, while Manny Parra tossed seven shutout innings as the Milwaukee Brewers routed the Toronto Blue Jays, 7-0, in the opener of a three-game interleague set at Miller Park.

Parra (6-2) allowed just four hits, striking out five and walking four for the Brewers, who have won two straight and four of their last six overall. Russell Branyan hit a two-run homer, while Prince Fielder and Craig Counsell each belted solo shots.

"I was seeing the ball in high-definition tonight," Braun said. "It's an extremely difficult game, it was one of those nights where the ball slowed down for me, and my teammates as well."

Dustin McGowan (5-5) allowed four runs on four hits in four innings to take the loss for the Blue Jays, who have dropped three straight. Vernon Wells, Rod Barajas, Lyle Overbay and Brad Wilkerson had the hits for the Jays, all singles.

"It's frustrating for everyone in this lineup, and it's gone on too long," Wells said. "We're a better team than this. We haven't done what we need to do to be successful."

Fielder put Milwaukee on top in the bottom of the second, crushing McGowan's first pitch of the inning for a mammoth homer to straightaway center.

Counsell extended the lead to 2-0 in the home third, golfing a 3-2 fastball into the seats in right for his first homer in nearly a year.

The long ball continued to pay dividends for the Brewers in the fourth, as Branyan pushed the gap to 4-0 with a two-run blast. Braun smoked a leadoff double to left, and two outs later Branyan launched a 2-2 fastball into the second deck in right.

Braun added another titanic homer for the Brewers in the sixth, a one-out solo shot deep into the stands in left-center off reliever Brian Wolfe, then completed the rout with a two-run opposite field bomb off Jason Frasor in the eighth.

"They took it to us," said Jays manager John Gibbons. "Seven hits, five homers, we couldn't stop them tonight. It's been a tough month, we're due to get hot, no question about that."

Parra put two men on with nobody out in the seventh after singles by Barajas and Eckstein, but came away unscathed. Mark DiFelice tossed a perfect final two innings to finish off the shutout for the Brewers.

"(Parra) was missing down and I've got no problem when he misses down," said Brewers manager Ned Yost. "He just made a slight adjustment and started getting the ball back up again. It wasn't much of anything, he was banging strikes and was on the attack."

Game Notes

Braun's two-homer game was his third of the season. Braun eclipsed the 150 RBI mark for his career with his first home run, reaching the milestone in just 182 games. He is the fastest to reach 150 RBI since Walt Dropo accomplished the feat in 155 games with the Red Sox from 1949-1951...Counsell had not homered since taking Kyle Lohse deep on July 25, 2007 in Cincinnati...In a matchup of two of the most dominant pitchers in baseball this season, Milwaukee sends Ben Sheets (7-1) to the hill on Wednesday against Toronto's Shaun Marcum (5-3).
