Cardinals 12 VS. Cubs 6 : RECAP

September 19, 2008

CHICAGO -- Adam Kennedy's grand slam was the biggest hit in an unceasing barrage against Carlos Zambrano, and the Cardinals beat the Cubs, 12-6, at Wrigley Field on Friday afternoon. St. Louis has won back-to-back games after losing seven straight.

Zambrano (14-6), coming off a no-hitter in his last appearance, had nothing for the Cardinals in an ugly 1 2/3-inning start. The first three batters touched him for base hits, making it 1-0, and after a walk and a fly out, Kennedy drilled the second grand slam of his career.

Two hits and two walks in the second inning chased Zambrano, and Kennedy greeted reliever Sean Marshall with an RBI single. Zambrano was charged with eight runs, all earned, on six hits and three walks. Ryan Ludwick added a two-run home run in the fifth as the Cardinals kept putting up runs against the Chicago bullpen.

Adam Wainwright (10-3) pitched five innings for the first win of his career against the Cubs. For the second start in a row, Wainwright wasn't at his sharpest, but this time he was able to work through it and put up a decent start. He was charged with two earned runs, though both could have been unearned thanks to a misplay by Kennedy, on four hits. Wainwright struck out five and walked three.

The Cardinals pulled within 5 1/2 games of the Wild Card-leading Mets with nine games remaining on the schedule. They also kept the Cubs' magic number for clinching the National League Central at two, ensuring that Chicago will not take the field as division champs on Saturday afternoon.
