Brewers 8 VS. Reds 1 : RECAP
September 21, 2008
|
CINCINNATI -- There's fight left in these Brewers after all.
With their backs against the National League Wild Card wall, the Brewers busted out for six runs by the end of the fifth inning and salvaged the finale of a tough road trip with an 8-1 win over the Reds on Sunday at Great American Ball Park.
The Brewers finished a 2-8 trip and won for just the fifth time in 20 games this month to stay alive in the National League Wild Card chase. They entered the day 2 1/2 games behind the Mets, who in turn trailed the NL East-leading Phillies by a half-game.
Prince Fielder drove in three runs and Ryan Braun drove in one as the Brewers' middle-of-the-order players inched closer to 100 RBIs. Fielder hit a solo home run in the second inning off Reds starter Bronson Arroyo (15-11) and a two-run double in the fourth to temporarily tie Braun for the team lead with 98 RBIs.
Braun then pushed ahead with his 99th RBI on a run-scoring groundout in the fifth. It was his third RBI in the last 19 games.
Brewers starter Seth McClung was yanked with a 4-1 lead and the bases loaded in the fourth inning and replaced by Todd Coffey (1-0), a former Red who struck out both hitters he faced and was rewarded with the win by the official scorer.
The Brewers' eight runs marked their best offensive output since a 7-0 win in Pittsburgh on Aug. 31 in CC Sabathia's near-no-hitter.
