Saints' Shockey out three-to-six weeks with sports hernia
New Orleans, LA (Sports Network) - New Orleans tight end Jeremy Shockey will undergo sports hernia surgery this week, keeping the Saints' new offensive target out three-to-six weeks, the team confirmed Monday.
Shockey, acquired in the offseason from the New York Giants in exchange for second and fifth-round draft choices in 2009, has recorded 16 catches for 151 yards in New Orleans' first three games this season.
The 28-year-old aggravated the injury against the Denver Broncos on Sunday, when he finished with eight receptions for 75 yards.
Shockey was selected by New York in the first round (14th overall) of the 2002 NFL draft. He played his first six years with the Giants, compiling 4228 yards and 27 touchdowns on 371 receptions. He was sidelined last year during New York's improbable Super Bowl run after breaking his left leg in Week 15 against the Redskins.
The Saints have also been without star wide receiver Marques Colston since Week 1 after the Hofstra product needed surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb.
